Lake County Warrant Search

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has the statutory and constitutional duty to enforce criminal warrants directed by the Lake County Circuit Court. The Warrant Services Team tracks active warrants, runs warrant sweeps, and coordinates extraditions with other agencies. People who need to search for Lake County warrants can use the Sheriff's posted active warrant list, contact the Warrant Services line, or self-surrender through the procedures the Sheriff publishes. Bench warrants for failure to appear are handled the same way. Search warrants are usually sealed before execution and do not appear in public active warrant results.

Lake County Active Warrant List

The Sheriff publishes an active warrant list through the Warrant Information page. The page links the current Active Warrants PDF, How to Self Surrender instructions, and a Most Wanted Sex Offenders list. The Sheriff says warrants remain active and on file until the wanted subject is apprehended or a court order cancels the warrant.

The active list is the primary public source for outstanding Lake County warrants. The Sheriff updates the file regularly, but a warrant may be served, cleared, or quashed at any time. Anyone relying on the list should call the Warrant Services Team directly to confirm the status of a specific warrant before acting on it. Do not assume an outdated PDF reflects current status.

Lake County Sheriff Warrant Information page

The Sheriff's posted page lists the address for the main Sheriff's Office and the phone for the Warrants directory. The active warrant link sits in the body of the page, alongside self-surrender guidance.

Warrant Services Team

The Warrant Services Team page explains that deputies transport people named in writs of habeas corpus, including subjects wanted by the Lake County Circuit Court who are serving prison terms elsewhere. The team also apprehends fugitives, coordinates extraditions, and works with federal, state, county, and local law enforcement on joint operations. Initiatives include automated electronic notification of active warrants to local police agencies, intelligence reports to the Highway Patrol Unit, warrant sweeps, and warrant reviews with the Lake County State's Attorney's Office.

The Sheriff's Office sits at 25 S Martin Luther King Jr Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60085. Phone 847-377-4000, or 847-549-5200 for non-business hours. Fax 847-984-5974. The Warrants directory line is 847-377-4300; fax 847-984-5973. Existing warrants tied to the Lake County Circuit Court direct the Sheriff to take custody and bring the subject to court for further action.

The Warrant Services Team also reviews older warrants for currency, which can result in updates or cancellations posted to the active list.

Types of Warrants in Lake County

Not every Lake County warrant works the same way. The category drives who can serve it, what shows up on the active list, and what happens once the subject is in custody. The types below appear most often in Circuit Court files.

  • Arrest warrant - issued on probable cause or after a charging document is approved by a judge.
  • Bench warrant - issued by a judge, often for failure to appear, violation of a court order, or contempt.
  • Search warrant - authorizes a search or seizure; often sealed before execution and not listed on the public active warrant page.
  • Fugitive warrant or extradition warrant - used when a person wanted in Lake County is found elsewhere or when another jurisdiction requests custody.
  • Civil warrants and writs - the Sheriff's Civil Process division handles writs, summonses, subpoenas, civil warrants, orders of judgment, levies, replevin, evictions, foreclosure sales, sheriff's sales, and tax-deed notices.

The Code of Criminal Procedure at 725 ILCS 5 governs Illinois criminal warrant procedure, including charging, bail, and pretrial release. The Lake County Circuit Court issues warrants under these rules; the Sheriff enforces them.

The Sheriff's Office uses the Lake County Sheriff's Adult Corrections Facility at 20 South County Street for booking and bond posting after a warrant is served. Bond is accepted 24 hours a day at jail reception in cash or certified cashier's check; personal checks, credit cards, debit cards, and traveler's checks are not accepted.

How to Resolve a Lake County Warrant

The right path depends on the warrant type. A bench warrant for missed court usually clears when the defendant appears voluntarily and the judge recalls the warrant. An arrest warrant tied to new charges usually clears only at a court date after booking and bond. A no-bond warrant means custody until the next hearing. Talk to an attorney before surrendering on a no-bond warrant, especially if the underlying charges are serious.

  1. Verify the warrant through the Sheriff's Warrant Information page or by calling Warrant Services at 847-377-4300.
  2. Do not rely on third-party people-search sites; their warrant data is often out of date or inaccurate.
  3. If the warrant came from a missed court date, contact an attorney or the Circuit Clerk to identify the case and reschedule.
  4. Review the Sheriff's How to Self Surrender instructions. Bring valid ID and avoid bringing items prohibited at the courthouse or jail.
  5. If bond is set, follow the jail rules: cash or certified cashier's check payable to Clerk of the Circuit Court, accepted 24/7 at jail reception.
  6. After a court order recalls the warrant, allow a few business days for local, state, and national databases to refresh. Confirm the clearance with the Sheriff before assuming the warrant is removed.

The Sheriff's Office at 25 S Martin Luther King Jr Avenue handles self-surrender intake during business hours. After hours, jail reception at 20 South County Street is the official intake point. A defendant with counsel should usually surrender with their attorney present.

Bench Warrants and Failure to Appear

Bench warrants come from a judge, usually after a defendant misses a scheduled court date. The Sheriff serves the bench warrant the same way as an arrest warrant. Once served, the defendant is brought to the Circuit Court for a new hearing where the judge can quash the warrant, modify bond, or order custody. For traffic cases, a failure to appear can also trigger an Illinois Secretary of State action against the driver's license.

The Clerk of the Circuit Court at 18 N County Street can confirm whether a case has a bench warrant attached. The portal usually shows the warrant entry on the public docket as WRNT or similar. If you find a warrant against you, do not delay: voluntary appearance with counsel generally produces a better outcome than a routine stop or arrest.

Most Wanted Sex Offenders

The Sheriff also publishes a Most Wanted Sex Offenders list as part of the Warrant Information page. Sex offender registration runs under the Sex Offender Registration Act at 730 ILCS 150. The Illinois State Police maintains the official statewide registry. For Lake County-specific data, use the registry's geographic search to filter by county or ZIP code. The registry is gated by a disclaimer agreement before search results display.

If you have information about a wanted person on the Sheriff's list, the Sheriff's contact lines and the State's Attorney's Office accept tips. Lake County also runs a Text-A-Tip service for anonymous reports.

Where to Find Help in Person
